Description

First you choose one out of four different characters to represent you, Scarlet (red army), Oberon (yellow army), Caesar (green army), or Madcap (blue army). The game is split into 10 levels – the first 9 are groups of 3 territories which can be completed in any other, while the final ‘Mother of All Battles’ has its own surprises.

Land is mostly of sand, grass or ice. You start with 100 men and you can use whatever quantity you find necessary on each island. The rest men left will go to another level with another new 100. In the second half of the game you can freeze men to save them for the Mother of All Battles. Once you select your island and place for your HQ, you must do some research for better weapons and defences. On the roof of your buildings you can put protectors like archers, gunmen, boiling oil men, and later on even laser turrets. If you send a team of unarmed men into an unoccupied square, they will build an additional base there, with larger armies completing this more quickly.

Tyrants: Fight Through Time

Overview & History

Developed by Bit Managers and published by Virgin Interactive in 1993, Tyrants: Fight Through Time (originally known in Europe as Mega-Lo-Mania) is a brilliant, highly inventive real-time strategy and god-game hybrid for the Sega Genesis. Diverting from typical fantasy tropes, the game drops the player into the role of one of four omnipotent deities—Caesar, Madler, Ironaxe, and Oberon—competing for ultimate supremacy across the epochs of human history. Spanning from the primitive Stone Age, through the Middle Ages and Modern Era, all the way to a distant Future, your divine mission is to guide your worshipers from simple cavemen to advanced interstellar conquerors. Each of the game's distinct territories requires resource management, rapid technological evolution, and tactical territorial domination against rival gods before time runs out and the planet collapses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard console strategy games of its era, Tyrants balances macro-level progression with micro-management. You begin each island map by deploying a handful of defenseless men onto the terrain. Players must command their followers to harvest vital resources—namely men, energy, and elemental minerals—to populate towers, research new inventions, and manufacture weaponry. The technology tree is the heart of the game; upgrading your civilization allows you to forge clubs, bows, catapults, tanks, and eventually futuristic sci-fi ordnance. Combat relies heavily on positioning and numerical superiority. You can group your units into armies to raid enemy habitats, flatten rival towers, and ultimately convert enemy worshipers to your divine cause. The ticking doomsday clock adds intense pressure, forcing you to wipe out opposing deities before environmental decay forces a catastrophic draw.
