Description

What would you think if your best friend went on a date with the King of the Dark World – because she thought he was cute?! You’d think she’d been duped – and you’d be right. The fiendish King Rogles stands poised to conquer the other worlds of the universe: the Dream World of Queen Valia, and the Human World. Rogles and his five Dark Lords have taken the force of Yang from Queen Valia and sealed it into a Fantasm Jewel. Only a warrior with a heart perfectly balanced between Yin and Yang can wield the Sword of Valis against the encroaching darkness! Yuko, a young student from the Human World, is the chosen one – and you will control her. She is to become the greatest warrior in the universe, never suspecting that her most fearsome battle will not be against a Dark Lord, but against her closest friend from the Human World – the one she warned, “Don’t go out with him, he’s the Dark…” But before she could finish, her friend ran off into The Darkness.

Valis

Overview & History

Released by Telenet Japan and localized by Renovation Products in 1991, the Sega Genesis version of *Valis* (originally *Super Valis IV* in Japan) is a distinctive 16-bit side-scrolling action-platformer. The dark, mystical storyline follows Yuko Asokura, an ordinary Japanese high school student who is chosen as the rightful wielder of the legendary Valis sword. Transported to a surreal dream dimension, Yuko must traverse treacherous fantasy realms to overthrow the tyrannical Rogles, who has usurped control of the ethereal world. Unlike the moody, cinematic PC Engine iterations, the Genesis adaptation delivers an arcade-paced action experience bolstered by lush sprite work, vibrant fantasy backgrounds, and an iconic, driving chiptune soundtrack composed by Shinobu Ogawa and others.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Valis is structured across a series of linear, platform-heavy stages culminating in demanding boss encounters. Players control Yuko as she fights off bizarre fantasy beasts, floating sentinels, and mechanized nightmares. Yuko's primary offensive tool is her glowing broadsword for fierce close-range melee strikes. However, as players progress, Yuko acquires powerful magical spells and elemental projectiles that consume a dedicated magic meter, allowing her to dispatch crowds of enemies from a safe distance. Navigating the stages requires precise platforming, as Yuko must conquer crumbling ledges, bottomless pits, and moving platforms. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels upgrade her weapon range and magical capacity, making strategic item collection essential for survival against the unforgiving late-game bosses.
