Description

In 2049, the human population of Earth embarks on a migratory voyage to try to colonize other planets. They leave mechanical “orbots” to clean up the mess they made on Earth through littering and pollution. Raster, a high-level orbot who watches Earth through a planetwide computer network, is accidentally attached to a working nuclear missile by a lesser orbot and goes insane, becoming an evil dictator named Warhead. He declares himself ruler of Earth, and begins preparing to execute any humans who dare return to their planet.

Enter Vectorman, a humble robot in charge of cleaning up toxic sludge by simply discharging it into the sun. As he lands on Earth after his last trip, he finds chaos and confusion. Because all the other Orbots are controlled by Warhead (Vectorman having not been affected because he was away), Vectorman takes it upon himself to destroy the errant orbot and restore peace to Earth.

Vectorman

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1995 for the Genesis, Vectorman emerged near the end of the 16-bit console era as a technological tour de force. Developed by Sega Technical Institute, the game was conceptualized to rival Rare’s pre-rendered 3D graphics in Donkey Kong Country. Instead of traditional pixel art, the development team built physical wireframe models, rendered them into 2D sprites, and captured them with ray-tracing software. The storyline plunges players into a dystopian 2049 where Earth has been abandoned by humanity, left entirely in the hands of "Orbots"—robotic sludge workers. Disaster strikes when a leading Orbot named Raster becomes trapped under a heavy television monitor, corrupting the master controller, Cain, into a megalomaniacal tyrant known as Warhead. You control Vectorman, a humble sludge-barge pilot who returns from deep space to clean up the toxic mess, defeat Warhead, and save the mechanized planet.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Vectorman delivers blistering run-and-gun action across 16 varied levels filled with industrial landscapes, mutating flora, and hazardous pools of radioactive sludge. The protagonist's signature weapon is a rapid-fire photon gun attached to his hand, which can be upgraded by collecting power-ups like the devastating "Super Shot" or the triple-spread "Wave Gun." Throughout the stages, Vectorman can transform into unique alternate forms using specialized morph power-ups, including a fast-drilling train, a destructive dune buggy, a soaring missile, and a multi-legged spider. Environmental interaction is central to the experience; players can shoot through floors, shatter glass containers, and utilize television monitors that double as bombs or gravity-flipping triggers. Boss battles are cinematic and challenging, requiring players to dodge projectile barrages while exploiting specific mechanical weaknesses on colossal foes like mechanized scorpions and robotic war-machines.
