Family Feud

Overview & History

Released by GameTek in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Family Feud successfully translated the iconic television game show hosted by Richard Dawson and Ray Combs into the 16-bit era. Unlike traditional arcade ports, this home console adaptation focused entirely on replicating the studio atmosphere, complete with digitized sound bites of the classic theme song, the iconic survey board flipping to reveal top answers, and the high-stakes tension of the Fast Money round. Players could choose from various pixelated family avatars to compete against the computer or a friend, attempting to guess the most popular answers to absurd and mundane public opinion polls.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game strictly follows the television rules, beginning with the Face-Off where two family representatives race to hit the buzzer and shout out the highest-ranking survey answer. Play then passes to the controlling family, who must uncover all hidden answers on the board without accumulating three strikes. A single strike turns control over to the opposing family for a steal attempt. Once a team clears the board or successfully steals, they advance to the Fast Money bonus round. Here, two family members answer five rapid-fire questions within a strict time limit, trying to cumulatively score 200 points to win the grand prize. The Genesis version stands out for its digitized speech samples and surprisingly deep database of survey questions.
