Zoom! is an arcade style puzzle game. Your character Zoomer (a Pacman lookalike with arms & legs) must trace the outline of the squares on the game board to light them up. Points are awarded when full squares are formed, although the game also displays how many lines must still be completed. You proceed to the next level when all the squares have been lit up. There are various monsters that will try to hunt you down – contact with these costs you energy and eventually a life. There are also a number of power-ups that will aid your quest – quick filling of tiles surrounding the bonus piece, a level skip and bonus points, for example.

Overview & History

Developed by Jump and published by Sega, Zoom! was released for the Sega Genesis in 1989 as an early port of the original 1988 Sharp X68000 computer game. The game stars a quirky, red, bouncing, anthropomorphic television set named Max. Max’s storyline is delightfully bizarre: he must traverse a series of hazardous, tile-based grids floating in a surreal void to eradicate an outbreak of pesky red ants and computer bugs that are corrupting the digital landscape. As one of the console's early titles, it showcased the Genesis's ability to handle fast-paced, colorful, pseudo-3D perspective shifts and bouncy arcade action straight from Japanese microcomputers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zoom! plays out on a rotating, grid-based cylindrical playfield viewed from a slightly skewed overhead angle. Max can run in four cardinal directions, but the core mechanic requires the player to completely paint or clear every single square tile on the grid by simply walking over them. Navigating the twisting cylinders is complicated by a timer and various hostile enemies, such as roaming green beetles and bouncing blocks, which deplete Max's health if touched. To survive, Max can unleash a limited projectile attack to blast enemies from afar. The game also features tricky warp tiles, speed-boosting power-ups, and gravity-defying sections where the entire grid rolls as Max moves, forcing players to constantly adapt their spatial awareness and pathfinding routes across dozens of increasingly frantic, musically upbeat stages.
