Description

Zoop is a fast-paced puzzle game in which the player eliminates colored shapes that are approaching his alter ego, another colored shape, before they reach the top, somewhat similarly to Tetris.

In order to eliminate the other shapes, you must point your piece at it and ‘fire’. If the shape is the same color as your piece, the shape is eliminated, as well as all of the shapes of the same color behind it, until your piece hits a piece of a different color. If the shape is of a different color, or it is hit when collecting a line of similar shapes, your piece exchanges colors with the shape.

Zoop

Overview & History

Originally conceived by Hookstone and published by Viacom New Media in 1995, Zoop arrived on the Sega Genesis during the height of the 16-bit puzzle craze. Diverting from the traditional falling-block formula popularized by Tetris, this abstract shooter-puzzle hybrid places the player at the absolute center of a grid-based arena. While it lacks a narrative campaign or cinematic storyline, the game trades traditional lore for frenetic, high-contrast arcade tension set against a techno-pop soundtrack. The Genesis port faithfully captures the frantic pace of the original arcade and PC versions, tasking players with surviving an endlessly encroaching wall of colorful geometric shapes before they overwhelm the center platform.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanic of Zoop revolves around color-matching and spatial subtraction. You control a tiny triangular crosshair positioned in the middle of the screen, facing inward from the four outer perimeters where incoming triangles, circles, squares, and stars slowly advance toward you. Firing a piece from your cannon into the queue alters the target's color or clears matching adjacent shapes. Special modifier tiles, such as 'Z' blocks that clear entire rows or bombs that wipe out local clusters, add necessary tactical depth to keep the grid from locking up. As the score increases, the music tempo accelerates, and the spawn rate intensifies, transforming a calculated puzzle into a test of pure reflex management.
