Description

“Eins! Zwei! Drei!” In the murky dawn the tyrant’s troops scuffle towards foxholes and tanks. Taking battle position, they quickly check their equipment and load cannons. Then they hunker down, awaiting the cry: “Attacke!” “Hup! Two! Three! Four!” On your order, rebel soldiers race to their war machines! Jets blast into the dawn, afterburners roaring. Convoys rumble toward the advance bases. Their single purpose: attack! War! You and your opponent face off for control of the world! You’re equally matched, man for man, weapon for weapon. You sweat as you order out heavy metal, mobilize troops, and plot the attack! You collide in dogfights, ground frays, and naval clashes! At last, you advance to their home base. Now! Crush the enemy – and become Supreme Commander of the free world!

Herzog Zwei

Overview & History

Released by Technosoft in 1989 for the Sega Genesis, Herzog Zwei is a monumental achievement that single-handedly birthed the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre years before Dune II or Command & Conquer. Set in a bleak, sci-fi future where warring factions battle over planetary territory, the game casts you as the pilot of a versatile transformation craft. Despite modest commercial success upon its Japanese and North American debuts, this 16-bit masterpiece heavily influenced legendary game designers and remains a cult classic for its brilliant fusion of arcade action and tactical resource management.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional top-down RTS games where you play as an omniscient cursor, Herzog Zwei forces you to directly pilot your combat vehicle—the Herzog—across a split-screen battlefield. The storyline unfolds across alternating maps, tasking you with destroying the enemy's heavily fortified base. Your primary unit can transform between a fast jet mode for rapid traversal and a bipedal robot mode equipped with a rapid-fire vulcan cannon. As the commander, you must manually fly over factories scattered across the terrain to capture them. Once controlled, these factories produce infantry, supply trucks, tanks, and anti-air missile launchers. You must physically pick up these units with your mech's grappling claws and air-lift them to the front lines. Managing fuel and ammunition is critical; if you run out mid-air, your craft plummets, leaving you vulnerable. The game brilliantly balances high-octane dodging and shooting with deep strategic planning, requiring you to simultaneously construct supply lines, issue basic attack or defend commands to AI squads, and engage enemy commanders in intense dogfights.
