Star Control is a science-fiction wargame which pits the forces of the Alliance of Free Stars against those of the predatory Ur-Quan Hierarchy. The games are designed so that you can ease into play, familiarizing yourself with menus, options and player controls. The Alliance and Hierarchy each possess different types of warships. Each vessel has its own maneuvering and firing characteristics, plus a unique special power that you can employ when circumstances dictate.

The game has two modules: the Melee, in which you can simply blast the computer or another player to smithereens using one of 16 different ships, in either Hierarchy or Alliance fleets; or, should you wish for a more challenging game, lets you play one of 9 preset scenarios.

Overview & History

Released for the Sega Genesis in 1991 by Accolade and ported by Realtime Associates, Star Control is a legendary sci-fi hybrid blending strategic sector-mapping with intense physics-based starship dogfighting. Set against the backdrop of the galactic conflict between the benevolent Free Stars Alliance and the oppressive, slave-driving Ur-Quan Hierarchy, the narrative tasks players with assembling an armada to break the oppressive seal placed around Earth. While originally making waves on home computers, the Genesis adaptation brought the epic space opera to console players, translating the deep PC strategy into a brisk, action-oriented campaign. Players must carefully manage resource gathering on uncharted planets while neutralizing enemy outposts, racing against a tense in-game clock to prevent total terrestrial subjugation by the insidious green conquerors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is neatly divided into two distinct phases: Strategic Management and Melee Combat. In the strategy mode, players navigate a top-down starmap, dispatching colony ships to mine planetoids for Element X, which is crucial for funding fleet upgrades and purchasing specialized dreadnoughts, carriers, and fast scouts. When hostile fleets intersect, the game transitions into the iconic Melee mode—a 1D arena combat simulator fought on a friction-free grid featuring gravitational planetary bodies. Each of the 14 playable starships boasts a completely unique physics profile, primary weapon, and secondary special ability. For instance, the Earthling Cruiser fires slow missiles and deploys a defensive fighter drone swarm, while the nimble Arilou Skiff can instantly teleport across the screen to disorient foes. Success requires mastering inertia, managing weapon energy reserves, and exploiting orbital slingshot physics to outmaneuver opponent flagships.
