Description

Imagine a time when mighty navies controlled the seven seas, ruthless pirates searched for hidden treasures and scholars argued that the Earth was round. Now, picture yourself as a young explorer on a mission that will carry you to the four corners of the globe.

Play the son of a Portuguese Duke out to discover the legendary land of Atlantis, a Spanish female navy lieutenant turned pirate, a British privateer commissioned by Henry VIII to destroy the Spanish fleet, an Italian adventurer in debt from his father or a Turkish orphan starting his own trading business.

Your adventure will take you to over 130 exotic destinations. Along the way, you will discover exotic monuments, long sought treasures and valuable merchandise to trade. As captain of your fleet, keep a careful eye on the horizon for pirates eager to steal your valued cargo or an enemy navy at war with the flag your ship flies. Once in port, remember to recruit mates, purchase new ships and gunnery, gather useful information and settle disputes with your enemies by challenging them to a duel.

Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

New Horizons

Overview & History

Released in 1993 exclusively for the 16-bit Sega Genesis by software house Sunsoft, New Horizons is a cult-classic sci-fi platformer that slipped past many mainstream gamers upon its initial launch. Set in the distant year 2142, the storyline follows exiled cybernetic operative Jax Vane as he navigates the derelict orbital colony of Kronos-4. Tasked with purging a rogue sentient AI known as the 'Aetherius Protocol' before it hijacks Earth’s planetary defense grid, Jax must survive nine sprawling, vertically scrolling sectors filled with biomechanical horrors, hazardous atmospheric vents, and zero-gravity platforming sections. Due to limited initial production runs and stiff competition from concurrent mascot platformers, physical cartridges of the game have since become elusive collector's items among retro enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

New Horizons distinguishes itself through a blend of frantic run-and-gun action and resource management. Unlike typical arcade shooters, Jax possesses a limited thermal battery that depletes whenever he utilizes his primary plasma cannon or activates his localized energy shield. Players must strategically harvest cooling cells dropped by downed enemy drones to prevent weapon overheating. The level design heavily emphasizes momentum, utilizing magnetic grapple pads that allow Jax to swing across bottomless chasms and high-velocity pneumatic tubes to bypass security checkpoints. Boss encounters require precision timing, forcing players to exploit specific blind spots in massive mechanical constructs like the Giga-Centipede MK-II while dodging tracking laser grids.
