The Puck Stops Here! Strap on your helmet and cinch up your skates because this is ice hockey, not nice hockey, a fast and furious all-out assault on your senses, where breakaways are met with bone-quaking body checks and the five hole looks more like a buttonhole. Skate faster, stop quicker, line it up and let it fly – this is the ultimate in breakneck, blistering sports action!

NHL 96

Overview & History

Released by EA Sports in the fall of 1995 for the Sega Genesis, NHL 96 marked a critical evolutionary milestone for the franchise during its 16-bit twilight. Developed while the CD-ROM era was beginning to bloom, this cartridge-based powerhouse maximized the Genesis hardware limits, introducing the revolutionary 'One-Timer' mechanic that completely redefined digital hockey scoring. It was also the final game in the series to feature the classic horizontal-scrolling perspective before EA transitioned fully to the isometric view with NHL 97, cementing its legacy as the ultimate refinement of the classic 2D era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

NHL 96 introduced groundbreaking additions to the formula, most notably the ability to create and trade players, full 1995-1996 NHL rosters, and the infamous 'battery backup' for saving season stats and playoffs. Visually, sprite animations were drastically smoothed out, allowing for more authentic skating momentum and bone-crunching checks against the plexiglass. The goaltender AI received a massive upgrade, featuring butterfly slides and desperation glove saves that rendered old-school cheese goals far less reliable. Players could also trigger strategic line changes on the fly and execute precise dekes, toe-drags, and slap shots using the 3-button or 6-button Genesis controller.
