Battle alluring Amazons who sling vicious boomerangs and drum out a war chant to turn your mind manic. Slide, duck, and cartwheel past lasers, spikes and bombs. Screech to a halt in the face of giant metal monkeys and centipedes.

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1990 for the Sega Genesis, Strider is a legendary port of the arcade platformer, meticulously adapted by licensee Sega. Set in a dystopian future year 2048, the storyline follows Hiryu, the youngest-ever Class A member of the elite Strider assassination organization. Armed with his plasma-generating sword, the Cypher, Hiryu is dispatched by his superiors to the frozen wastelands of Kazakhstan and beyond to assassinate Grand Master Meio, a tyrannical supreme ruler threatening global domination. The Genesis conversion stands out for its impressive sprite scaling, faithful recreation of the frantic pacing, and an atmospheric, cinematic soundtrack composed by Kawasaki and others that pushed the YM2612 sound chip to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Hiryu's mobility is the cornerstone of the game's high-speed action. Utilizing his Cypher blade, players can slash enemies in multiple directions, aided by special somersault maneuvers that offer invulnerability frames and sliding attacks to clear low obstacles. Across five sprawling, non-linear stages—ranging from tropical jungles to the gravity-defying alien architecture of the Third Moon—Hiryu gains robotic animal companions, including the robotic tiger (Ouroboros) and the hawk, which provide localized offensive and defensive support. Environmental traversal is remarkably fluid; Hiryu can effortlessly scale vertical walls and hang from ceilings using his magnetic sickles, turning every architectural surface into a potential highway or vantage point against relentless waves of cyborg soldiers, bio-mechanical beasts, and colossal multi-screen bosses like the giant robotic dragon Ouroboros.
