Description

The hero of the game is a young jungle-man named Toki. One day the evil wizard Dr. Stark kidnaps his girlfriend Wanda. When Toki tries to save her, he is turned into a monkey! Now Toki has to find Dr. Stark in his palace, to rescue Wanda, and to become a human being again!

It is a platform game with a lot of various levels: jungle, underwater, volcanic caves, on the ice… Toki’s only weapons are spitting on the enemies or jumping on them and crashing them. There are many possibilities to upgrade his spitting “weapon”; for example, if he finds an upgrade, he can spit fireballs.

Toki: Going Ape Spit

Overview & History

Originally birthed in the arcades by TAD Corporation, the Sega Genesis port of *Toki*—rebranded in North America as *Toki: Going Ape Spit*—arrived in 1992 as a whimsical yet punishing 16-bit side-scrolling platformer. The narrative follows a peaceful jungle warrior named Toki, whose beloved girlfriend Miho is savagely kidnapped by the wicked voodoo sorcerer Vookimedlo, who also casts a curse transforming poor Toki into a vulnerable, drooling chimpanzee. To save his true love and regain his human form, Toki must traverse treacherous prehistoric landscapes filled with bizarre flora, ticking time-bomb levels, and surreal bosses. While the Genesis version featured toned-down graphical fidelity compared to its arcade parent, it carved out its own niche through altered level layouts, bouncy physics, and a distinctly quirky auditory presentation that utilized the Genesis's notorious sound chip to deliver memorable chiptune jungle beats.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where jumping on enemies is the primary offensive tactic, *Toki* relies entirely on projectile combat. In his simian state, Toki’s primary attack is spitting explosive energy globes straight out of his mouth. Players can collect unique power-ups that radically alter this basic attack, transforming Toki’s spit into searing fireballs, bouncing basketballs, or rapid-fire laser beams. Furthermore, players can stumble upon specialized headgear—such as a football helmet that grants temporary invincibility against crashing hazards—and winged shoes that boost movement speed. The game is notoriously unforgiving, featuring a strict one-hit-death system where Toki instantly loses a life upon touching any hazard or enemy, requiring absolute mastery of his floaty jump arc and precise projectile timing across six distinct, hazard-filled worlds.
