Description

You are Yuko Ahso, a student in the Human World, called to fulfill your destiny in the Dreamland. Your mission is to wield the Sword of Valis to defend Dreamland against attack from the Dark King Glames. Glames seeks more territory to replace his disappearing Dark Kingdom. His powerful Sword of Lethus is the magical counterpart to Yuko’s Sword of Valis. Whoever has the pair controls enormous destructive power.

Yuko’s twin sister, Valna, is the new Queen of Dreamland. Yuko needs Valna and her powerful magic in the battle against Glames, but Valna is trapped in a crystal block. Only with the help of Cham and her fighting spirit can Yuko free her sister. Can Yuko depend on Cham who was born of the Dark Kingdom? Yuko must defeat the evil bosses Garther and Kolilanba before Cham and Valna can help.

You must evade and destroy Glames and his subordinates. Yuko, Valna and Cham can slide, high-jump and use special attacks with fire, ice and thunder. Increase your power by picking up attack items as you go. But time is running out. The fate of Dreamland hangs in the balance!

Overview & History

Released by Telenet Japan in 1990 and brought to the Sega Genesis in 1991 by Reno, Valis III represents the pinnacle of the cinematic platforming action RPG franchise on 16-bit hardware. The narrative thrusts players into a multi-dimensional crisis bridging the human world, the Dream Land, and the dark realm of Glames. Protagonist Yuko Asama, the chosen wielder of the Valis sword, must once again save existence, but this time she is not alone. In a unique twist for the series, players can swap between three distinct heroines on the fly: Yuko, her sister Valia, and the fierce warrior Cham. Historically, the Genesis version stands out from its PC Engine (TurboGrafx-CD) counterpart by trading redbook audio for Motohiro Kawashima's brilliantly driving, synth-heavy FM soundtrack, while adapting the sprawling level designs and replacing CD-ROM anime cutscenes with high-contrast, atmospheric sprite-based storytelling.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Valis III operates as a side-scrolling action-platformer featuring RPG elements like upgradable magic and health pools. The core mechanic revolves around utilizing the unique offensive and defensive toolkits of the three playable characters. Yuko relies on her iconic Valis sword and projectile magic; Valia wields a powerful staff that fires devastating elemental beams; and Cham utilizes short-range, high-damage claw attacks paired with superior jumping agility. Levels are designed with verticality in mind, requiring precise platforming across floating islands, shifting crystal caverns, and techno-organic alien landscapes. Players collect power-ups to increase attack potency and restore health, while managing a magic meter that drains when unleashing screen-clearing spell attacks against screen-filling bosses.
