Description

America’s favorite game show is now bigger and better than ever on the Sega Genesis. This all-new version features the beautiful Vanna White, and over 4,500 new puzzles. Choose the contestant you want to be, play against the computer, or against up to two friends. Spin the wheel, buy a vowel, or attempt to solve the puzzle. Only Vanna White knows what lies behind the tiles. Watching your favorite game show is fun, but GameTek’s Wheel of Fortune puts you right on the stage.

Wheel of Fortune

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by GameTek for the Sega Genesis, Wheel of Fortune successfully bridges the gap between America’s favorite television game show and 16-bit console gaming. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of host Pat Sajak and hostess Vanna White, this iteration aimed to recreate the prime-time puzzle-solving experience in family living rooms. Unlike its simpler 8-bit predecessors, the Genesis version pushed higher color palettes and crisper sound chips to emulate the flashing lights of the studio set. Players select their digital contestants, choose or randomize names, and step up to the iconic wheel to bankrupt opponents or spell out glory.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay faithfully mirrors the television show, utilizing a multi-round structure that progresses from the traditional toss-up rounds to the high-stakes Bonus Round. Players take turns spinning a physics-simulated wheel populated by cash values, free spins, the dreaded Bankrupt wedges, and Lose a Turn spaces. Once a dollar value is locked in by landing on a wedge, the player guesses a consonant; correct guesses add cash to the bank per letter revealed, while vowels must be purchased using accumulated winnings. The alphabet tracking board dynamically lights up as letters are guessed. Up to three players can compete, allowing for cooperative couch multiplayer or solo matches against surprisingly competent AI opponents who masterfully exploit letter frequency.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move selection cursor across the alphabet board and menu options
  • Action Keys: Spin the wheel, confirm letter selections, and buy vowels
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
