Description

Zero Wing is an horizontal shooter game where the player is in control of a ZIG, an escape pod released after its main ship was attacked and destroyed by the evil cyborg CATS, bent on taking over the world.

Like most games in the genre, there are three color-coded weapons: red (scatter), green (homing) and blue (lasers). Each weapon has three levels of power, and to obtain those, similar upgrades must be collected sequentially. However, what makes the game unique is the ability to use a traction beam to trap an enemy and then throw him against his peers, destroying them.

The game (more precisely, the European PAL version of it) is known for being the origin of the grammatically incorrect phrase in the English translation, All your base are belong to us, which has since become an internet phenomenon.

Zero Wing

Overview & History

Developed by Toaplan and ported to the Sega Genesis by Naxat Soft in 1991, Zero Wing is a classic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that achieved legendary status not for its gameplay alone, but for its hilariously butchered English localization. Set in the 28th century, the tyrannical cyborg-pirate CATS launches a devastating invasion of the United Galaxy Federation, capturing its planets one by one. As the pilot of the ZIG-01 starfighter, your mission is to infiltrate the enemy armada and dismantle their forces. While the original Japanese arcade version featured subdued dramatic cutscenes, the European Mega Drive release birthed the immortal "All your base are belong to us" meme due to its comically broken opening cinematic, forever cementing the game in internet history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup titles where you simply dodge and blast, Zero Wing introduces a strategic grappling mechanic via the "Force Beam." Players can capture smaller enemy drones and reel them in using the capture cable. Once tethered, enemies can be absorbed to upgrade your ship's firepower or used directly as a dynamic, rotating shield against incoming enemy projectiles. The ZIG-01 can collect three distinct weapon power-ups: the wide-spreading Red Laser, the piercing Blue Wave, and the homing Green Plasma. Spread across seven grueling, bio-mechanical stages filled with relentless waves of alien armadas and towering end-of-level bosses, the Genesis port offers a blistering pace, punishing difficulty, and a hauntingly atmospheric electronic soundtrack composed by Tatsuya Uemura.
