Wacky Races for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is an unreleased racing game developed by Eden Entertainment Software and is based on the TV franchise. Though never released onto store shelves, a prototype of the game has since emerged on the internet.

You take on the role of Dastardly and Mutley from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series in this action title with superficial racing overtones. Your aim is to complete each course in a particular position, which is achieved either by waiting for them to suffer enough damage to drop out of the race, or by inflicting that damage yourself. Your car is armed with a forward-shooting arrow to impale the opposition cars, and deal with the many hazards the races throw at you, including boulders and rabbits, which can be taken out for points.

Developed by Atlus and published by Barkley for the Sega Genesis in 1992, Wacky Races translates Hanna-Barbera's iconic Saturday morning cartoon into an eccentric 2D side-scrolling platformer. Unlike traditional racing games of the era, this adaptation casts the player strictly as Dick Dastardly and his snickering sidekick, Muttley. The storyline revolves around Dastardly's perpetual obsession with finishing first by any underhanded means necessary, forcing him to traverse treacherous environments—ranging from haunted forests to rocky canyons—to intercept and sabotage the other classic racers like Penelope Pitstop and the Slag Brothers before they cross the finish line.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Abandoning the driving seat, players manually control Dastardly on foot across six hazard-filled stages, utilizing a surprisingly robust arsenal of gadgets. Mechanics heavily rely on platforming precision, item collection, and projectile combat. Dastardly can toss exploding bombs at obstacles and rival characters, while Muttley acts as an active combat asset—capable of being deployed as a propeller-driven aerial glider to clear massive chasms or biting snapping-turtle enemies. Along the linear stages, players collect token wrenches and hidden icons to unlock temporary power-ups, invincibility, or bonus points. Boss encounters at the end of acts pit Dastardly against customized vehicles of the competing racers, requiring timed jumps and precise bomb arcs to dismantle their mechanical contraptions.
