Description

This is a simple arcade for 1 / 2 players for the SEGA SG-1000 range of consoles (Mark I, Mark II). The game also works in the Mark III and the Master System.

Uwol enjoys a quiet retirement at his cozy house in the beach of Pepinoni (province of Badajoz), so he doesn’t realize that somebody has stolen all his money from the bank. Luckly, his good ol’ friend Meemaid, the evil sorceress-turned-super heroine learned about the incident as she was using the ATM in the very moment the bank was being robbed.

That’s why they decide to head back over to the new and refurnished Storm Palace to regain the lost fortune. But it won’t be easy… the new basement is deep and full of dark corners. Besides, the intrincate disposition of rooms makes it easy to get lost and walk in circles. And that’s what happened: Uwol and Meemaid got lost and reached in the deepest side of the labyrinth – where Vampy, Franky, Fanty and Wolfy, plus the children’s favourite Cthulhy dwell. So you may guess it won’t be an easy task to escape with the money!”

Super Uwol

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized as a homebrew love letter to the golden era of arcade platforming, Super Uwol was ported to the Sega SG-1000, breathing unexpected retro life into Sega's 1983 hardware. Developed by Mojon Twins and later adapted for the SG-1000's humble technical limitations, the game casts players as Uwol, a treasure-hungry creature on a quest to escape perilous ruins by collecting all glittering loot before the clock strikes zero. Despite the SG-1000’s notoriously restricted color palette and sprite-flicker hurdles, this port delivers a remarkably faithful, fast-paced arcade experience that pushes the classic console to its absolute graphical and processing limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops through a series of enclosed, single-screen multi-platform rooms heavily inspired by classic 8-bit collectathons like Roland in Time and Pyjamarama. Uwol must navigate mazes of ladders and platforms while dodging erratic, screen-crossing enemies that grow increasingly aggressive with every cleared stage. To even the odds, Uwol can collect temporary power-ups scattered across the ruins, granting abilities such as temporary invincibility, freeze rays, or speed boosts. The objective in each stage is straightforward yet punishingly tactical: snatch every single coin and treasure chest while mastering the game's momentum-based jumping mechanics. Precision is mandatory, as mistiming a ladder grab or misjudging a fall results in an instant loss of life, turning every stage into a frantic puzzle of movement and risk management.
