Description

Vexed is puzzle game for the SG-1000. It’s got all the attributes of an addictive, fun application for your SG-1000. It’s easy to learn, but hard to master. Give it a try, and you’ll see what we mean!

Basic Game Play Vexed is a puzzle game in which your goal is to move similar blocks together, which causes them to disappear. Once all the blocks are gone, you’ve solved the level and you’re presented with a new level to solve.

You move blocks by putting the target on them and pressing the button and moving to either the right or left. If an empty space is encountered, “gravity” takes over and the blocks fall towards the bottom.

The Vexed scoring is based on a golf-like “par” concept. If you solve the level in the same number of moves as the target, you get a score of 0, or par, for that level. Note that the target may not be the most efficient one, so you can beat “par” and have a negative score.

The score displayed in the title bar is a cumulative score for the entire level pack.

Restart
Click the right button to restart the level. The level score is reset. You can restart as often as you like.

Overview & History

Released in the mid-1980s exclusively for Sega's pioneering 8-bit home console, the SG-1000, Vexed is a fascinating relic of early Japanese microcomputer and console puzzle design. At a time when the nascent SG-1000 library was heavily reliant on simple action ports and static shooters, this obscure title attempted to bring cerebral, grid-based puzzle mechanics to the living room. Although it never achieved the widespread, iconic status of contemporary Nintendo offerings, Vexed carved out a niche among hardcore retro enthusiasts who appreciated its minimalist aesthetic, unforgiving logic challenges, and stark, monochromatic-leaning visual design that squeezed every drop of processing power out of the SG-1000's rudimentary hardware architecture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of Vexed revolves around spatial reasoning and physics-lite block manipulation. Players are dropped into single-screen, enclosed maze-like arenas populated by a variety of differently marked tiles and blocks. The primary mechanic requires you to slide these blocks horizontally across the grid. When two identical blocks collide, they immediately vanish from the board. The ultimate goal of every stage is to clear the entire screen of all tiles. However, the game's difficulty stems from strict gravitational rules and restricted movement pathways: if a block is pushed off an edge with empty space beneath it, it will drop, often trapping the player or creating dead-end configurations that make completing the level mathematically impossible. There are no twitch-reflex action sequences here; instead, every single push must be meticulously calculated backward from the final desired board state. A single mistimed or misdirected slide means hitting the reset button and rethinking the entire spatial puzzle.
