Overview & History

Developed and published by Sunsoft in 1995, *Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors* was an ambitious 2D fighting game built for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo AES hardware. Before creating the beloved *Waku Waku 7*, Sunsoft crafted this sci-fi epic featuring a diverse cast of alien, cyborg, and humanoid combatants racing to stop the malevolent cosmic entity known as Felden. Notably, the game completely bypassed traditional boundaries by featuring unbounded, scrolling stages that lacked traditional walls or corners, introducing an arena design that forced players to continuously adapt their spacing. Despite stiff competition from SNK's own *King of Fighters* and *Samurai Shodown* series, *Galaxy Fight* carved out a cult following due to its vibrant sprites, scaling pseudo-3D parallax backgrounds, and unique rhythm. The roster includes memorable fighters like Jafar, a sorcerer utilizing floating geometric rings; Alvan, a sword-wielding hero employing sweeping energy projectiles; and Roomi, a quirky pop-idol alien utilizing chaotic, unpredictable hitboxes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard fighting games of the era, *Galaxy Fight* utilizes a specialized 4-button layout: Weak Punch, Strong Punch, Weak Kick, and Strong Kick. Because the stages lack conventional boundaries, corner traps are replaced by edge-of-the-screen scrolling, allowing agile fighters to constantly retreat or pressure opponents across massive alien landscapes. The game introduces a distinct "Dash and Run" system coupled with high-flying air dashes, giving the combat an extraordinarily fast, aerial-heavy momentum. Special moves—such as Kazuma’s blazing dragon punches and Grolza’s crushing mechanical grapples—can be chained into devastating super combos when the hidden power gauge fills. Defensive mechanics are equally robust, allowing players to execute precision rolls and split-second guards against aggressive rush-down tactics.
