Description

Neo Mr. Do! is an enhanced version of Mr. Do!, and features greatly improved graphics, stereo sound, and intermissions that can be viewed when an area is completed. You can also travel to the bonus stages, where the object is to make your way toward the exit by carefully dropping apples to create a path. These bonus stages can be reached by killing all enemies on the screen, rather than collecting all the items that are in groups.

Neo Mr. Do!

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by Visco, Neo Mr. Do! is a striking reimagining of Universal's classic 1982 arcade puzzle game, developed specifically for SNK's powerful Neo Geo AES hardware. Unlike traditional arcade ports, this iteration completely overhauled the audiovisual presentation while preserving the addictive, maze-digging obsession of the original title. The storyline follows the titular circus clown, Mr. Do, who must once again protect his circus-themed domain from creeping, multi-legged monsters and erratic red-capped freaks. Utilizing the Neo Geo's 16-bit capabilities, Visco replaced the original's sparse aesthetics with vibrant, highly detailed sprite work, bouncy animations, and a swinging, high-energy soundtrack that modernized the cult-classic formula. Though it flew under the radar compared to bombastic fighting games of the era, it remains a beloved, quirky gem in the AES library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around clearing single-screen, dirt-filled mazes by tunneling through the earth and dropping heavy red apples onto pursuing enemies. Unlike standard maze games where you simply avoid foes, Mr. Do wields a versatile 'Power Ball' that can be thrown to stun or destroy enemies; however, the ball must bounce back to him before it can be thrown again. If the ball is lost, players must dig up extra energy pellets to retrieve it. To achieve high scores, players must collect cherries scattered throughout the dirt, unleash fireballs by eating alpha-numeric bonus items, and rescue cute trapped animals. The game also introduces frantic pacing shifts when standard enemies mutate into aggressive 'alphamons' if Mr. Do takes too long to clear a stage. The Neo Geo AES version brilliantly retains this frantic balance of strategic routing, quick reflexes, and high-stakes apple-dropping physics.
