Description
King of the Monsters 2 is a 2D wrestling/fighting game with three monsters for players to select. Once the monster selection is completed players must guide their monsters through a series of stages consisting of parts of various famous world cities. Each level consists of a short side-scrolling portion in which the player’s monster must deal with things like attacking tanks and ships. At the end of the side scrolling portion the alien boss monster appears for a fight.
The buildings and vehicles in the stages sometimes give up certain items when destroyed. The best type to collect is the power-up icon; up to two of these can be collected to boost the monster’s strength. There are also icons that make monsters move faster or slower, drain collected power-up levels, explode for damage, or just provide points. Accumulated power-up levels carry over into subsequent stages.

Overview & History
Released by SNK in 1992 for the Neo Geo AES and arcade hardware, King of the Monsters 2: The Next Thing shifts the genre focus from the wrestling-ring constraints of its predecessor into a sprawling, pseudo-isometric beat-'em-up/destroy-em-all epic. Set in the year 1999, the Earth faces a new alien menace led by the grotesque entity known as King Wallace. The original roster of surviving giant beasts—Super Geon, Atomic Guy, and Cyber Woo—must band together to tear through ruined urban landscapes, military blockades, and bizarre extraterrestrial monstrosities across mutated globe-trotting stages. SNK abandoned the pin-fall wrestling mechanics of the first game, replacing them with standard health bars, intense side-scrolling destruction, and screen-clearing power-ups.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike the original game's grapple-heavy mechanics, KOTM2 functions much more like a traditional arcade brawler scaled up to monstrous proportions. Players traverse crumbling environments, smashing buildings, bridges, and power lines to unearth glowing power orbs that level up their kaiju's attributes, boosting strength, health, and unlocking screen-clearing magical special attacks. The control layout abandons pure wrestling inputs in favor of responsive punches, kicks, and dashes, complemented by devastating grapple animations when two monsters collide. Each of the three playable titans possesses distinct abilities: Super Geon relies on crushing physical bites and tail swipes, Atomic Guy commands explosive plasma beams and fiery sweeps, while Cyber Woo utilizes lightning-fast cybernetic melee combos and throwing attacks. Adding to the frantic pace, the game features a robust two-player simultaneous co-op mode—allowing both giants to level cities together—though a competitive friendly-fire mode is triggered if players accidentally strike each other.
