Description

2 Player fighting game similar to Killer Instinct graphically. Other than that is is a rather poor fighting game on a system with many greats.
Controls make use of all of the four buttons of the original Neo Geo arcade stick. Available moves, combat moves and combat actions are explained in a section preliminary to the game and are: punch, kick, dash and quick dash, jump, jump attack, throw, super throw, cushion throw (a throw that does nothing but invert the position of the fighters on the fighting field), counterattack, meter build up (the fighter can not move while charging the power meter: once that is done, a Super God move of gargantuan power can be released). It is possible to dash forward, and perform fight moves while on air for a time longer than normal, on account of the preterhuman nature of the battlers (the game is defined as «aerial battle action game» in the spine of Neo Geo version package). Each divinity wields a personal weapon of medieval fashion, like for instance an imposing sword, a bow, a dreadful halberd. Victory goes to who prevails in 2 out of 3 rounds (the duration of each of which is 60 seconds), and a bonus score related with time and energy left is given to them.

Ragnagard

Overview & History

Developed by System Vision and published by Saurus, *Ragnagard* (known as *Shinra Bansho* in Japan) stormed the Neo Geo AES and MVS arcade platforms in 1996. Set in a celestial realm of myth and divinity, the storyline chronicles an apocalyptic conflict among ancient gods, demigods, and elemental spirits vying for absolute supremacy over the heavens. Standing out with its distinctive pre-rendered 3D sprite graphics—similar to *DonPachi* or *Killer Instinct*—this 2D fighting game pushed SNK's hardware to render large, heavily detailed character models against lush, mythological backdrop stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional SNK fighters, *Ragnagard* introduces a frantic aerial combat system centered around "Fly" and "Dash" mechanics that allow combatants to instantly close the distance or soar across the arena. The combat engine relies on a standard four-button layout: Weak Attack, Strong Attack, Jump, and Element. Players build up an elemental gauge by executing special moves, which can then be unleashed to perform screen-clearing super moves or chaotic elemental transformations. The roster features eight eccentric deities, including the fiery Bazu, the electricity-wielding Son Goku, and the serpentine water spirit Halen, each sporting complex command lists featuring multiple multi-hit aerial combos, projectile parries, and devastating desperation moves triggered when health dips into the critical red zone.
