Description

Rage of the Dragons is a fighting game based on a story of dragon worshipping and the threatening rise of the evil Black Dragon cult. To stop the rich, powerful, and young man possessed by the Black Dragon, the old master of the Sho Setzu Ken form leaves his dojo for a confrontation. Unfortunately, he’s old and weak, and he dies before getting there. His daughter Lynn (White Dragon), pupils Jimmy (Red Dragon) and Billy (Blue Dragon), and many others are swept up into the inevitable conflict. Similar to games like Mortal Combat and Killer Instinct, Rage of the Dragons allows control of 14 different characters each with different moves and powers. The NEO GEO Advanced Entertainment System gets a rare new game with this 2002 release.

Rage of the Dragons

Overview & History

Released in 2002 by Evoga Entertainment in collaboration with Noise Factory, Rage of the Dragons for the Neo Geo AES is a spiritual successor to the cult-classic 1995 arcade fighter Double Dragon. Originally conceived as an official adaptation, licensing hurdles shifted the project into an original homage featuring heavily redesigned iterations of classic Billy and Jimmy Lee. Set in a gritty, crime-ridden metropolis terrorized by the secret society known as the Dragon's Claw, the narrative follows martial arts masters and street fighters uniting to rescue Marian and avenge their fallen mentors. Despite arriving late in the Neo Geo's commercial lifecycle, the game achieved critical acclaim for its polished production values, striking hand-drawn sprites, and atmospheric urban stages, ultimately securing its place as a high-value collector's piece for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rage of the Dragons stands out through its dynamic tag-team mechanics, directly rivaling Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom series. Players select two fighters from a diverse roster of ten, executing seamless mid-combo tags, dual-character team super moves, and life-saving 'Rescue' interruptions when the active character is pinned in a corner. The battle system relies heavily on the 'Duel Gauge' meter at the bottom of the screen, which fluctuates depending on offensive and defensive momentum, unlocking devastating EX specials and ultimate 'Dragon's Breath' supers when maxed out. Characters like Billy, Jimmy, and the brawny Abubo boast a vast array of command normals, chain combos, and specialized throw setups. The game demands precise spacing and quick reflexes, rewarding aggressive rushing as well as strategic zoning across its challenging arcade ladder.
