Description

You are a secret agent sent to infiltrate and enemy base and take out their leader. Armed with your fists, a knife and a pistol, you will have to defeat all enemy soldiers you encounter and rescue any trapped scientists.

The Super Spy is played from a first-person perspective. The actual graphics are done using two-dimensional backgrounds and sprites, but are arranged in such a way so that you view the world from your character’s eyes. You can scroll left and right through hallways and enter any doors you come across by pressing forward. You can also walk forward into any vertical hallways you encounter to get to horizontal hallways further in the background. The game consists of a series of levels, all laid out as mazes with horizontal and vertical hallways to traverse.

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1990 as an early launch title for the powerful Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, The Super Spy is a bizarre and ambitious genre hybrid that blends first-person perspective brawling with side-scrolling action. Players step into the combat boots of Roy Blade (or Kazuma Shirai in two-player co-op), counter-terrorism secret agents tasked with infiltrating a sprawling, underground corporate skyscraper in Tokyo taken over by the evil terrorist organization known as Z. Unlike traditional beat-'em-ups of its era, SNK attempted to revolutionize the arcade landscape by forcing players into a claustrophobic, pseudo-3D first-person viewpoint down narrow hallways and office corridors, punctuated by sudden shifts to a traditional 2D side-scrolling perspective during specific boss encounters and elevator shafts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Survival in The Super Spy requires tactical mastery of close-quarters combat and resource management. Players navigate grid-like floor plans using an overhead map while engaging enemies in real-time first-person fistfights. The arsenal extends far beyond bare fists; players can scavenge and cycle through a machete, a magnum, an assault rifle, and time bombs. Each weapon has finite ammunition or durability, forcing strategic weapon-switching against knife-wielding thugs, guard dogs, and heavily armed commandos. RPG elements are woven into the progression: players can level up their health bar, punch power, and kick strength by collecting hidden power-up items or rescuing hostages locked behind numeric keypad doors. Landing successful combos triggers screen-shaking impact frames, though sloppy spacing leaves Roy vulnerable to devastating counter-attacks from flanking foes.
