Description

The super-hero must stop the destruction of a city at the hands of a giant robot and its maker. The object, as Eightman (or Nineman), is to move left or right punching enemies and fight a boss at the end of the level. In some levels, you are chasing after a vehicle while enemies jump out at you. Power-ups can be collected along the way, which, when collected will make your kicks and punches stronger as well as give you bombs which are used to damage all enemies. If a two-player game is in progress, a spark will be between them and their bomb power will be increased.

EightMan

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1991 for the Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, *EightMan* adapts the classic 1960s Japanese manga and anime sci-fi hero into an arcade-style run-and-gun platformer. Developed by Pallas, the game tells the dark cyberpunk tale of Detective Yokoda, whose body is gunned down by a criminal syndicate. Transferred into an advanced cybernetic super-body by Professor Tani, he becomes the invincible cyborg EightMan, racing against a destructive time limit dictated by his rapidly depleting energy cells. Unlike SNK's typical brawlers, this title emphasizes relentless horizontal scrolling action, explosive gunfire, and high-speed traversal across neon-lit futuristic cityscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, *EightMan* introduces a unique directional shooting mechanic and energy-management system. Players must constantly collect glowing 'E' capsule power-ups dropped by defeated enemies to prevent EightMan's internal nuclear battery from flatlining. The game features diverse weaponry, including flame-throwers, homing missiles, and heavy lasers, alongside the signature 'Super Speed' power-up that makes EightMan invulnerable as he blurs across the screen, turning enemies into dust upon impact. Boss encounters demand precise positioning and aggressive firepower, utilizing destructible environments and multi-tiered platforms to test the player's reflexes across six intense stages.
