Description

As a soldier, you and/or a friend must travel through Vietnam to stop the scientist and his world destroying laser machine. In the game, you must shoot enemy soldiers, tanks, helicopters, jeeps, and more by aiming the machine gun cursor and shooting at them. Within each location, you can pick up more powerful weapons such as machine guns and flame throwers, but these have a limited supply of ammunition. Pressing down on the joystick while running at the same time will cause your character to perform a somersault and be invincible for a second. At the end of every location, you will need to defeat a series of bosses, which are not the same every play. Cut-scenes are viewed in between locations, and contain dramatic digitized dialogue.

NAM-1975

Overview & History

Released in 1990 as a launch title for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo MVS and AES systems, NAM-1975 drops players into a grim, alternate-history retelling of the Vietnam War infused with science fiction elements. As a joint-operation strike team consisting of commandos silhouetted against napalm-lit jungles and techno-ruins, your mission is to rescue a captured scientist holding the secret to a devastating enemy super-weapon. Developed by SNK before they perfected the standard run-and-gun formula with titles like Metal Slug, this pioneering vertical-scrolling shooter establishes a uniquely atmospheric, tension-filled tone through its gritty synthesizer soundtrack, flashing warning sirens, and relentless enemy onslaughts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrollers, NAM-1975 utilizes a pseudo-3D perspective that allows players to freely roam the lower third of the screen while aiming crosshairs further upfield. The game introduces a crucial evasion mechanic: players can tap the dodge button to execute a combat roll, granting brief invulnerability against incoming mortar shells, sniper fire, and mutant beasts. You alternate between a standard infinite-ammo assault rifle, heavy-artillery bazookas for armored vehicles, and limited-use smart bombs that clear the screen. Cooperating with a second player adds strategic depth, as splitting screen coverage is vital for surviving wave-based attacks, boss encounters in heavily fortified bunkers, and the infamous pursuit sequences where you fire relentlessly from the back of a moving jeep or helicopter.
