3 Count Bout

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1993 for the Neo Geo MVS and AES systems, 3 Count Bout—known in Japan as Fire Suplex—stands out as a gritty, arcade-style wrestling game that blends traditional fighting game inputs with professional wrestling flair. Set against the backdrop of the "WNC" (Wrestling New Classic) promotion, the storyline follows a grueling tournament to determine the ultimate champion after the mysterious disappearance of the legendary fighter, Red Dragon. Unlike typical grappling games of its era, SNK infused 3 Count Bout with the kinetic energy, bombastic announcer commentary, and exaggerated character designs characteristic of early '90s arcade fighters, setting it apart from console-bound wrestling sims.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay of 3 Count Bout deviates from standard beat-'em-ups by utilizing a modified fighting game engine. Players choose from a diverse roster of colorful athletes, ranging from martial artists and street brawlers to masked luchadores and heavy-hitting monsters like Big Bomber. Combat relies heavily on a three-button layout governing punches, kicks, and grappling attempts. Executing grapples requires closing in on the opponent and timing directional inputs—such as half-circle or quarter-circle motions combined with attack buttons—to unleash devastating suplexes, piledrivers, and signature aerial maneuvers. Unique to this title is the "Street Match" mode, which transitions the brawl outside the squared circle and into city alleys, construction sites, and warehouses. In these environments, the ring ropes disappear, and players can utilize environmental hazards, street furniture, and scattered weapons like wrenches, pipes, and motorcycles to bludgeon their opponents. A stamina and health system dictates when a wrestler can break free from holds or execute a match-ending pinfall, while successful pinfalls require rapid button mashing to kick out before the referee's three-count.
