Description

Conventional Baseball no longer exists in the year 2020. The “Super Baseball Association” has been very profitable over the years with robotics power players up against the strongest of athletes. Due to the secret manipulation of certain robotics team players, abilities have been computer controlled to decide the outcome of certain games, benefiting the SBA.

Die hard players discovered the SBA’s cheating and have now disconnected several parts of the computers to achieve fair and challenging play. Now the games may continue in the famed “Cyber-Egg” Stadium where only power and skill will determine the winner!

Super Baseball 2020

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1991 for the Neo Geo MVS and AES systems, Super Baseball 2020 (originally titled 2020 Super Baseball) envisions a futuristic, high-octane reimagining of America's pastime set in the then-distant year of 2020. Developed by SNK's subsidiary Alpha Denshi (ADK), the game drops players into a world where human athletes play alongside mechanized cyborgs on neon-lit, floating stadiums equipped with jump zones and hazard traps. As one of the early third-party titles on SNK’s 16-bit hardware, it pushed the console's scaling and sprite capabilities, offering a distinctly sci-fi aesthetic that set it apart from traditional baseball simulations like Nintendo's Baseball or Sega's World Series Baseball.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard baseball titles, Super Baseball 2020 introduces aggressive arcade mechanics, most notably the "Power Up" system. Players can spend money earned through successful plays—such as home runs, strikeouts, and spectacular catches—to upgrade their roster mid-match. Upgrades dramatically boost a player's speed, hitting power, and pitching velocity, turning ordinary athletes into unstoppable powerhouses. The ballparks themselves alter the flow of the game; they feature jump pads that allow fielders to leap dozens of feet into the air to rob hitters of home runs, as well as electronic trap zones that instantly kill the ball or penalize fielders. The roster includes a mix of human captains and standardized male and female cyborg players, each boasting unique attribute balances. Pitchers can hurl blazing fastballs, screwballs, and gravity-defying breaking balls, while batters must time their swings precisely using the Neo Geo's four-button layout to execute standard hits, bunts, or towering home runs.
