Ironclad

Overview & History

Released originally for SNK's prestigious Neo Geo CD system in 1996 by Saurus, *Ironclad* (known as *Chotetsuto Chiki Chiki* in Japan) eventually received an ultra-rare, highly coveted AES home cartridge adaptation that commands massive collector prices today. Blending steam-punk aesthetics with horizontal scrolling shooter action, the game places players in the cockpit of advanced robotic armor suits fighting against the mechanical menace of the Farsus empire. You pilot either "Chiki" or "Pepper," veteran pilots tasked with utilizing the legendary Ironclad armor to reclaim their homeland. The game stands out for its branching path structure, letting players select different mission routes after clearing initial stages, resulting in multiple distinct endings and immense replay value for hardcore shmup enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, *Ironclad* relies on a dynamic "Option" and modular weapon system. Unlike standard shooters where power-ups merely change your primary gun, collecting energy capsules charges your drone pods, allowing them to detach, shield your ship, or be fired directly into enemy defenses as devastating guided missiles. The game introduces a unique charging mechanic; holding the primary attack button builds up a screen-clearing special gauge. Movement is deliberate, requiring players to weave through claustrophobic corridors of clockwork fortresses and dodge dense bullet patterns while managing timing-based invulnerability dashes.
