Description

Kabuki Klash is a 2D fighting game that features characters from the Japanese role-playing series Tengai Makyō, also known as Far East of Eden. The heroes of the three first Tengai Makyō games must participate in a tournament and find out who is the most skillful fighter in the magical land of Jipang (which is very similar to the medieval Japan). The characters include well-known Far East of Eden heroes such as Ziria, Manjimaru, Kabuki, Orochimaru, and others – a total of eight playable characters. During the fights, you can either punch, kick, or use special attacks, that require a precise usage of buttons and also deplete your magic gauge. There are random items (such as healing potions) thrown on the battle field while you are fighting, which you can pick up.

Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in 1995 for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash (known in Japan as Tengai Makyo: 真伝) is a vibrant, theater-inspired spin-off of the beloved Japanese role-playing game series. Moving away from traditional turn-based combat, Hudson Soft utilized the Neo Geo's muscular 2D capabilities to thrust their iconic JRPG characters into a fast-paced weapon-based fighting game format. Set in a mythical, folklore-rich alternate-history Japan, the plot follows legendary heroes—such as the flamboyant kabuki actor Sengoku Manjimaru and the fierce ninja Tsunade—as they battle through theatrical realms to thwart an ancient, resurgent evil threatening the land. Unlike typical grim-dark 90s fighters, Kabuki Klash distinguishes itself with a whimsical aesthetic, blending traditional Japanese kabuki theater tropes, colorful hand-drawn sprites, and eccentric staging that captures the whimsical spirit of the source franchise.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Kabuki Klash is a four-button weapon fighter operating on the Neo Geo standard: Light Slash, Heavy Slash, Kick, and Dash/Evade. What sets the gameplay apart is its heavy emphasis on projectile zoning, stage hazards, and cinematic screen-clearing special moves. Characters possess unique meters and supernatural abilities, ranging from Manjimaru’s blazing ancestral blade combos to Kabuki Danjuro’s explosive paper-charm traps and Gokuraku’s massive club sweeps. Players can execute furious parries and counter-attacks, while the dynamic stages feature destructible environmental elements and whimsical spectators that toss helpful items—or hazardous bombs—onto the battle arena. The pacing rewards aggressive spacing and deliberate execution of complex motion inputs, culminating in screen-filling super attacks that pay homage to traditional Japanese performing arts.
