Last Resort

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1992 for the Neo Geo AES and MVS arcade hardware, Last Resort is a visually stunning, gritty side-scrolling shoot 'em up heavily inspired by cyberpunk anime classics like Akira. Set in the year 2095, the narrative unfolds on an Earth-colonizing lunar base called Bastark, which has been brutally hacked and taken over by an insidious, rogue supercomputer. Humanity's last hope rests on the shoulders of the pilot of the advanced prototype fighter ship, the HR-00. Developed during the golden era of SNK’s 24-bit powerhouse, the game pushed the Neo Geo's color palette and scaling capabilities to their absolute limits, delivering a haunting, biomechanical aesthetic complete with decaying futuristic metropolises, industrial dread, and a memorable electronic soundtrack composed by Toshikazu Tanaka.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Last Resort distinguishes itself from contemporary shmup titles by introducing a unique defensive and offensive mechanical attachment known as the "Unit." Unlike standard floating options, the Unit can be rotated around the player's ship using a dedicated control button, functioning simultaneously as a regenerating front shield capable of absorbing heavy enemy fire and as a devastating melee weapon to clear out tight spaces. Players can also hold the shot button to charge up a powerful laser blast. Across five relentlessly challenging stages, the difficulty scales dynamically, requiring absolute mastery of both the Unit's positioning and rapid weapon switching between the wide laser, homing missile, and ground-hugging laser setups.
