Description

The Slum… an area of town completely forgotten. No one could imagine the cruelness suffered by innocent people who were transformed into horrible mutant creatures by genetic experiments. They hovered everywhere and completely took control of the town.

Mutation Nation is a 1-2 player action game where you must control your hero and beat up any mutant that gets in your way, by either using your fists or one of four special attacks. A boss at the end of each area needs to be defeated if you want to proceed further through the game.

Mutation Nation

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1992 for the Neo Geo MVS and AES platforms, Mutation Nation is a gritty, sci-fi beat-'em-up that plunges players into a dystopian near-future. Set in Neo United City, the plot follows two martial artists, Rick and Kevin, who return from training only to find their metropolis overrun by horrific, biomechanical mutants created by the mad scientist Genocide. Unlike traditional urban brawlers of the era, this title blends classic side-scrolling street fighting with a distinct, grotesque bio-horror aesthetic reminiscent of classic body-horror cinema. Despite launching during the height of the arcade beat-'em-up craze, the AES home cartridge version remains a coveted collector's item due to its challenging difficulty, vibrant sprite work, and pumping synth-funk soundtrack composed by SNK's in-house sound team, Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mutation Nation distinguishes itself through a unique "Super Attack" charging mechanic and elemental power-up system. Players can unleash standard combos, jumping aerial kicks, and grapples, but holding down the attack button charges a devastating energy blast. Throughout the stages, players collect four distinct elemental spheres—Fire, Electricity, Wind, and Water—which temporarily transform Rick or Kevin into grotesque, super-powered mutant avatars capable of wiping out hordes of enemies with screen-clearing special moves. The combat demands precise spacing and crowd control, as waves of heavily armed mercenaries, cyborgs, and mutated beasts attack simultaneously. The game also features chaotic two-player cooperative play, allowing friends to team up and clear out Genocide's bio-lab abominations across six distinct, visually striking stages.
