Description

A mad scientist decides to create an army of robots to destroy the city, capture all the citizens, and use their brains for more robots to take over the world. You control one of two robots who use its fists and special attacks to take on the army throughout a jungle stage and various buildings in the destroyed city. Robots and robot dogs sometimes leave arms or metal bars that can be used as weapons. At the end of each area, you need to defeat a boss in order to proceed to the next area.

Robo Army

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1991 for the Neo Geo AES and MVS arcade hardware, Robo Army is a gritty, sci-fi beat 'em up set in a dystopian future where the cybernetic mastermind Hellhound and his mechanical legions have overrun Earth. Players step into the heavy metallic boots of two freedom fighters—Max, a brawny cyborg, and Rocky, a sleek battle robot—tasked with punching, blasting, and ripping their way through six biomechanical stages to reclaim the planet. Distinct from fantasy-themed brawlers of the era, the game stands out for its industrial aesthetic, featuring ruined futuristic cities, heavily armored bosses, and a distinct heavy-metal tone that showcases the raw sprite-scaling power of SNK's 16-bit architecture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Robo Army distinguishes itself within the scrolling beat 'em up genre through its aggressive, high-impact combat mechanics and unique transformation system. Beyond standard punches and kicks, characters can unleash devastating combos, dashing tackles, and screen-clearing special attacks at the cost of a small amount of health. A standout feature is the power-up system: collecting glowing energy capsules allows the heroes to temporarily morph into specialized mechanical forms—such as a hovering K-9 attack dog, a high-speed motorcycle, or a towering, heavily armed battle tank. These transformations drastically alter the player's attack range and mobility, adding a layer of tactical depth to crowd control against relentless waves of mutant cyborgs, killer drones, and towering mecha-bosses.
