Description

Samurai Shodown III was to be the start of a bold new direction for the franchise.

The most obvious difference between this game and the others in the series is the notably darker aesthetic. The more light-hearted characters (Earthquake, Cham Cham, and Gen-an to name a few) from the previous games have been excised, and even the kabuki master, Kyoshiro Senryo, received a redesign, transforming him from a flamboyant stage performer into a grim-faced, muscular man. All of the characters have been completely redrawn. The animation is very smooth for all characters, another departure from the graphical style of the second game.

Samurai Shodown III

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1995 for the Neo Geo AES, Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood (known as Samurai Spirits: Zankurou Musouken in Japan) represents a drastic tonal and mechanical shift for the beloved weapon-based fighting franchise. Moving away from the vibrant, somewhat theatrical historical settings of its predecessors, Samurai Shodown III embraces a much darker, gritty, and cinematic aesthetic. The narrative centers on the terrifying and ruthless antagonist Zankurou Minazuki, a bloodthirsty demon who must be stopped by the game's diverse cast of warriors, each grappling with their own inner demons and tragic fates. This installment introduced redesigned sprites for returning fan-favorites like Haohmaru, Nakoruru, and Ukyo Tachibana, alongside memorable newcomers such as the fierce Basara and the towering Gaira Caffeine, creating a leaner, meaner roster of fourteen distinct fighters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Samurai Shodown III completely revamped the combat system by replacing the traditional "Power Gauge" with the innovative "Spirit" (or Slash/Bust) selection screen. Before a match begins, players choose between the orthodox "Slash" mode, which favors precise spacing, heavy single-hit damage, and traditional special moves, or the aggressive "Bust" mode, which alters character properties, introduces entirely new movesets, and alters character personalities to reflect a darker nature. SNK also introduced the ability to micro-dash and air-block, significantly increasing the mobility and speed of matches compared to the deliberate pacing of earlier entries. The iconic Rage Gauge still allows players to deal massive counter-attack damage when filled by absorbing opponent strikes, but the overall risk-reward matrix requires razor-sharp timing for parries and weapon-disarming techniques.
