Description

Released around the same time as the film of the same name and loosely based on its story, this installment in the Double Dragon series also moves away from the traditional roam-the-streets-fighting to a pure one-on-one fighter. There are ten characters to choose from, including Billy and Jimmy and the game has colorful interactive backgrounds, screen zooming, over-the-top special moves and with the inclusion of double jumps, combos, charges for the losing player and counter hits, there is plenty of room for advanced fighting strategies.

Double Dragon

Overview & History

Released by Technōs Japan in 1995 exclusively for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo MVS and AES hardware, this fighting game adaptation of the iconic beat-'em-up franchise reimagines Billy and Jimmy Lee alongside martial arts master Marian. Rather than a traditional scrolling brawler, this installment transitions the saga into a one-on-one 2D fighter, capitalizing on the arcade craze ignited by Street Fighter II and Fatal Fury. Based loosely on the 1994 Hollywood live-action film adaptation, it stands out as one of the final releases for the platform, boasting gorgeous pre-rendered sprites that echo the aesthetic of Killer Instinct and Donkey Kong Country, alongside a thumping, high-energy soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Departing from its cooperative roots, the game focuses on intense martial arts duels. It introduces a revolutionary 'Power-KO' gauge that fills as players land or absorb attacks, allowing them to unleash devastating desperation moves when near defeat. Combat features a four-button layout utilizing heavy and light punches and kicks, paired with an innovative 'Super Jump' mechanic that lets characters leap high into the air to evade projectiles or execute soaring aerial combos. Players can execute signature franchise moves such as the Cyclone Spin Kick and the Rising Knee, alongside unique chain combos and wall bounces. The roster includes 10 playable fighters, each bringing distinct styles—from standard brawling to mystical energy blasts. The game also features hidden characters and alternate finishing moves that reward mastery of the timing-heavy defensive rolls and counter-attacks, making it a surprisingly deep technical fighter despite its cinematic presentation.
