Description
It is a “falling blocks” puzzle game based on the Bomberman franchise. The goal of the game is essentially to cause your opponent to lose by causing their gameplay field to fill to the top with objects. You do this by causing chains of bombs to explode, sending useless rubble over to your opponent’s field, which they must then remove themselves. Bombs are earned by causing chains of three identical blocks to disappear. Bombs can only be blown up with an explosion from a lit bomb, which falls from the top of the screen every so often. If the player causes enough damage, they can eventually earn a giant bomb, which will remove a large amount of debris from the playing field, and cause their opponent a good deal of trouble.
Bomberman: Panic Bomber
Overview & History
Originally released in arcades and ported to the powerful 16-bit Neo Geo AES in 1994 by Eighting and Hudson Soft, Bomberman: Panic Bomber (known as *Panic Bomber* in Japan) takes Hudson's iconic mascot out of the traditional maze-running grid and drops him squarely into the frantic world of falling-block puzzle games. Serving as an eccentric spin-off, the game features a whimsical storyline where the villainous Bumbezz and the Bomberman crew are caught up in a chaotic scramble triggered by a mysterious, evil bomb that threatens to shatter peace across the galaxy. Unlike its contemporaries on the Super Famicom or PC Engine, the Neo Geo AES version benefits from superior color palettes, larger animated character sprites during versus matches, and a bumping, high-energy chiptune soundtrack that elevates the arcade-style competitive tension.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
At its core, Panic Bomber is a head-to-head puzzle game reminiscent of Puyo Puyo or Columns, but infused with explosive Bomberman flair. Players stack color-coded blocks of bombs as they descend from the top of the playfield. The primary objective is to group matching colored bomb icons to trigger chain reactions and clear space. When you form a successful combination, you send 'Trash Bombs' (Skull blocks) over to your opponent's screen to clog their board. The twist arrives via the special 'Fire' blocks; when cleared alongside matching bombs, they detonate adjacent blocks and directly inflict massive panic on the opposing player by shrinking their play area or dropping unpredictable hazards. Characters like Bomberman, Pretty Bomber, and various nefarious villains each possess distinct personality traits, taunt animations, and specific attack patterns that dictate how aggressively they counter-attack during the grueling best-of-three matches.
