Developed by Face and originally published by SNK in 2001, Zupapa! is one of the rarest and most fascinating platformers to grace the Neo Geo AES hardware. Coming near the end of the console's commercial life, this arcade gem tells the whimsical story of Zupapa and Zupatasa, tiny alien heroes on a quest to rescue their kidnapped infant children from the clutches of the evil villain Dark Dum. Originally prototyped in 1994, the game sat on shelves for years before finally getting a limited release, making original Neo Geo cartridges a prized collector's item. Its vibrant, hand-drawn sprite work and bouncing, imaginative level designs evoke classic 90s mascot platforming while retaining the arcade-hard difficulty synonymous with SNK’s catalog.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zupapa! sets itself apart from standard side-scrolling platformers through its unique companion-launching combat mechanic. Players control the titular hero across bizarre, toy-filled worlds, utilizing miniature helpers known as Zupas. Instead of attacking enemies directly with physical strikes, players hurl these bouncing Zupas at foes to stun them. Once an enemy is immobilized, a follow-up tackle sends them careening across the screen to take out other hazards and rack up massive point multipliers. Along the way, players collect power-ups that alter the elemental properties of their Zupas, granting temporary explosive, freezing, or electrical attributes. The game features fast-paced vertical and horizontal scrolling, frantic boss battles at the end of each world, and a hidden rescue mechanic where freeing trapped baby Zupas grants extra lives and secret bonus points.
