Description

Super Dodgeball uses the same basic gameplay used in the other games in the series with some minor differences. The game puts you in control of a team of 3 characters (with you controlling the lead character or the one with the ball at the time) that must defeat a selection of other teams in order to become the champion. This time around the teams are all formed by characters from the Nekketsu Kunio Kun universe, each representing different suburbs of Tokyo that compete in an amusement park for the ultimate title. Each character has their unique stats and special moves, which now depend on a power bar that can be charged-up by holding both attack buttons.

Super Dodge Ball

Overview & History

Released by TechnuS in 1996 exclusively for the Neo Geo MVS and AES systems, Super Dodge Ball (known in Japan as Kunio-tachi no Banka spin-off era or simply Super Dodge Ball arcade sequel) takes Technos Japan’s beloved delinquent sports franchise and supercharges it with 24-bit hardware. Unlike its 8-bit predecessor, this Neo Geo iteration ditches the simple sprite scaling for massive, beautifully animated characters, vibrant international backdrops, and a pulse-pounding techno soundtrack. While it retained the core concept of pelting opposing teams with a heavy leather ball, the AES version elevated the franchise into a frantic, arcade-fighting sports hybrid featuring teams representing countries like the USA, Kenya, China, and Iceland.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game departs from traditional sports titles by introducing a health bar for every player on the court rather than standard scores. Matches are won by completely depleting the stamina of all opposing team members using standard throws, high-speed dashes, and devastating team-specific "Super Shots" that require charging your power meter. Players control a roaming captain and two back-court outfielders who can pass the ball across opponents to set up inescapable crossfire attacks. The Neo Geo hardware allows for chaotic four-player multiplayer (via adapters) or a grueling single-player tournament ladder where defeated country teams can even be recruited to your roster. Defensive maneuvers include catching incoming high-speed balls fractions of a second before impact or ducking entirely, adding a tight risk-reward layer to the frantic pacing.
