Description

You and/or a friend must choose one of three characters to play as, each with different speeds at which they control their ships. Then select three weapons to use for the front and back of your ship. During play, you must travel to every planet in the solar system, and defeat the various enemy ships and the boss near the end of the planet. Your weapons can be upgraded during the battle, and you can also collect HyperBombs if you want to do maximum damage. Contains a nice soundtrack reminiscent of early 1990s “rave” music.

Zed Blade

Overview & History

Released by NMK in 1994 for SNK's powerful Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, Zed Blade (known in Japan as Operation Ragnarok) is a cult-classic vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up. Set in the distant future of 2150 A.D., the plot follows humanity's desperate final stand against the "Evil Brain," an artificial intelligence that has hijacked Earth's orbital defense network and automated military forces. Eschewing the conventional horizontal orientation typical of many 16-bit and 32-bit shooters, NMK utilized the Neo Geo's scaling capabilities to deliver blistering vertical action punctuated by pre-rendered 3D-style sprites and an iconic, driving electronic-ambient soundtrack composed by Kazumi Mitani.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zed Blade distinguishes itself through a deep weapon-customization system. Before launching into battle, players select from three distinct ships—the Red Falcon, the Blue Cyclone, and the Yellow Thunder—each possessing unique speed attributes and default shot trajectories. As players navigate through five sprawling stages filled with biomechanical terrors and massive capital ships, they collect power-ups that alter their primary gun and spawn an orbital option module. By pressing the secondary attack button, players can dynamically rotate this option around their craft to block incoming enemy bullets or focus firepower in 360 degrees. A dedicated bomb button unleashes screen-clearing devastation, crucial for surviving the chaotic bullet-hell patterns of the game's relentless bosses.
