Description
Sometime in their past, the planets Remuria and Mutras started an interplanetary war that showed no sign of ending. The endless fight between the human-like inhabitants of the two planets had gone so long that weapon development moved into dangerous territory: Organic Weapon Production combined with alien technology. Soon, a sentient weapon – Brawshella – was born. Brawshella gathered all animal life on both planets and forced them to do its bidding and attack the humans. In a week, the humans were assimilated by Brawshella.
Yet, once they were assimilated, they found no other purpose in life but to continue fighting each other. After a while, four of the assimilated fighter pilots regained their consciousness and remembered their pasts. Upon discovering their humanity, the pilots were conflicted with following Brawshella’s orders or fighting it to fully regain their independence. The pilots finally turn against the machine in a battle to rediscover themselves and reclaim their planets.
Blazing Star
Overview & History
Released by Yumekobo in 1998 for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, *Blazing Star* stands as one of the absolute pinnacle achievements in the 16-bit and 24-bit horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up genre. Serving as the spiritual successor to the acclaimed 1995 title *Pulstar*, this sci-fi masterpiece abandons the bleak, purely biological horrors of its predecessor for a wilder, more vibrant space-opera aesthetic. The storyline plunges players into a desperate interstellar war against the "Organic Computing" (OC) weapon system—a rogue, self-replicating bio-mechanical supercomputer that has gone berserk and threatens to consume all sentient life across the galaxy. Developed with an intoxicating blend of pre-rendered 3D sprites and traditional hand-drawn anime assets, *Blazing Star* pushes the Neo Geo hardware to its absolute limits, delivering stunning pseudo-3D parallax scrolling and jaw-dropping explosions that make every stage a feast for the eyes, complemented by an unforgettable, high-energy techno-rock soundtrack.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard shmups, *Blazing Star* revolutionizes arcade combat with its unique charging mechanic and risk-reward scoring system. Players select from one of six distinct ships—ranging from the balanced Hell Hound to the heavy-hitting Peacemaker—each equipped with a standard rapid-fire shot and a devastating charge beam. Holding down the attack button charges a powerful localized energy blast, but releasing it at the precise moment a secondary targeting reticle locks onto multiple enemies triggers the game's legendary "Bonus" score chain. Eliminating enemies in specific succession yields massive point multipliers, famously rewarded with the booming, iconic audio announcer shouting "Wonderful!" or "Lucky!" Additional mechanics include the "B.S. Shot," a screen-clearing bomb that consumes a stock of accumulated power, and dynamic power-up pods that cycle through shield generators, speed boosts, and specialized sub-weapon upgrades. The game also features a cooperative two-player mode, forcing dynamic positioning and synchronized firepower to survive the punishing, multi-form boss battles that await at the end of each of the game's intense cosmic stages.
