Description

Somewhere in Hong Kong, two martial artists face each other in a vast courtyard. The challenger is a stout man in brown skin. The ground has been tainted with blood. However, his crescent blade hasn’t touched his opponent yet. It was a one-sided battle. He was already exhausted and it won’t be long before he would fall. “Fool, you will become one of my family” resounded the opponent’s voice, as the challenger crumbled to the floor and was turned into sand.
The Fighting Instinct Tournament, or FIST, is a tournament as fierce as its name suggest. There was no shortage of martial artists who entered the tournament seeking fame, and yet there were many who left the tournament as corpses. The last challenger who remains in this lawless tournament gets to challenge the organizer of the tournament, the Head of the Huang Financial Clique, for the chance to win the massive prize money. The martial artist who can manage to defeat him will obtain the honor of truly calling him or herself the strongest. However, none of the martial artists who were chosen to challenge the champion in a private final match have ever come back alive. Nobody knows when exactly the tournament is held, since only an avaricious will was spiraling over there. The sponsor is actually an evil spirit who possessed the body of a modern man from Hong Kong who has established a selection system to amplify his dark powers. The FIST tournament has gathered numerous participants from around the globe and another sacrifice will be chosen this year.

Breakers

Overview & History

Released by Visco in 1996 for SNK’s powerful Neo Geo AES hardware, Breakers is a cult-classic 2D fighting game that emerged during the post-Street Fighter II boom. Initially conceived under the working title Kyogoku Zenki, the game underwent a massive overhaul before its final release to refine its pacing and character roster. While it competed directly with heavyweights like The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown, Breakers carved out its own niche through vibrant, anime-inspired character designs and fluid animation. The storyline revolves around a global martial arts tournament hosted by the nefarious tycoon Dao-Long, who seeks to awaken an ancient, malevolent entity. Fighters from diverse backgrounds—such as the fiery street fighter Sho Kamui, the nimble ninja Saizo, and the Egyptian powerhouse Tia—must battle through the ranks to thwart Dao-Long's apocalyptic ambitions, leading to an expanded update titled Breakers Revenge in 1998.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Breakers borrows the traditional four-button arcade layout of the Neo Geo (Light Punch, Heavy Punch, Light Kick, Heavy Kick) but introduces refined mechanics that reward aggressive play. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the game features a dedicated dash and backstep system that keeps momentum high. Players can execute Super Moves by filling a specialized meter at the bottom of the screen, which also allows for devastating counter-attacks called "Break Shots." Characters possess unique normals and special moves, such as Sho's iconic *Rekka* fist combos and Tia's projectile fireballs, requiring precise motion inputs like quarter-circle and half-circle rotations. The collision detection is remarkably tight, allowing for intense mid-air juggles and strategic cross-up setups.
