Description

Cyber-Lip is a horizontally scrolling, side-view platformer shoot ’em up (this combination is sometimes referred to as “run and gun”) arcade game released by SNK in 1990 for the SNK Neo-Geo MVS. The player(s) control(s) Rick and/or Brook, two human veteran soldiers, who are sent by an unspecified “federal government” into combat on a last-ditch attempt to save Earth from a malfunctioning military supercomputer in charge of all military androids. Gameplay consists of battling through large amounts of enemies, collecting power-ups and defeating several end-of-stage bosses. This makes it comparable to the likes of Metal Slug or Contra in terms of gameplay.

It is noted that a handful of members from Irem developed this title and later went on to create Metal Slug.

The game was later ported over for the Neo Geo CD system, in 1995. The CD featured improved voice acting and added a short introduction to the game explaining the plot.

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1990 as an early launch title for the powerful Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, Cyber-Lip is a sci-fi run-and-gun platformer heavily inspired by Capcom's Contra and Forgotten Worlds. Set in the distant future of 2011, the narrative revolves around a rogue military supercomputer named Cyber-Lip, which has gone haywire and unleashed hordes of biomechanical mutants, alien monstrosities, and killer androids to exterminate humanity. Players step into the combat boots of two battle-hardened cyborg commandos—Rick and Brook—tasked with infiltrating the mainframe's sprawling installations across six visually striking, organic-meets-industrial stages to deactivate the rogue AI. Despite its initial obscurity compared to later Neo Geo heavyweights, the game's chunky sprite work, heavy metal aesthetic, and unrelenting arcade challenge have earned it a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Cyber-Lip drops players straight into fast-paced, side-scrolling action, emphasizing constant movement and precise shooting. Unlike traditional run-and-guns, the game grants players the ability to aim diagonally and shoot in eight directions, a crucial mechanic for dealing with airborne threats and multi-tiered boss fights. Throughout the stages, players can collect weapon power-ups from floating pods, upgrading their standard blaster into devastating alternatives such as the Laser, Spread Gun, Flame Thrower, and Homing Missiles. Rick and Brook are also equipped with a powerful melee knife attack for close-quarters combat when ammo is scarce. The controls are responsive, utilizing a dedicated button for jumping, shooting, and locking the character's position in place to rain fire on approaching swarms. Cooperatively, a second player can jump into the fray to multiply the destructive chaos, though the game's steep difficulty curve demands absolute synchronization and quick reflexes to survive the relentless onslaught of grotesque boss mutations.
