King of the Monsters

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1991 for the legendary Neo Geo AES home arcade system, King of the Monsters brilliantly fused the chaotic thrill of classic kaiju cinema with the hard-hitting mechanics of professional wrestling. Rather than traditional beat-’em-up destruction, battles take place inside cordoned-off city grids modeled after Tokyo and Osaka, where towering beasts trade blows amidst collapsing skyscrapers. Players select from a roster of six mutated behemoths—ranging from the giant gorilla Kong-derivative Rockrawler to the amphibious behemoth Geon and the towering alien Super Geon—fighting to establish ultimate planetary dominance through brutal slugfests.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard fighting games governed by health bars, King of the Monsters utilizes a unique wrestling-style pinfall and stamina system. Players weaken their opponents with devastating tail swipes, atomic breath, and crushing dropkicks before executing a pinning maneuver, holding the rival monster down for a three-count to secure a round victory. Matches are further complicated by a tug-of-war power struggle mechanic during grapples, where rapid button mashing determines who initiates a suplex or body slam. Destructible environments allow players to hurl entire buildings, tear up power lines, and pick up explosive oil drums to use as improvised weapons. As rounds progress, referees scamper across the rubble while fighter jets and tanks bombard the combatants, adding an extra layer of hazard to the screen. The game supports intense cooperative two-player matches, letting friends team up to clear the single-player campaign or settle grudges in aversus mode.
