Description

The gameplay is straightforward with elements similar to that of Capcom’s 19XX games, but it is incredibly difficult even on the easiest difficulty level. Unlike most scrolling shooters, the vehicle is a seaplane instead of spaceship or airplane. As the in-game instructions indicate, move the joystick around to maneuver the seaplane. Press the A Button to fire bullets. The player can also hold the A button for a semi-automatic fire. Press the B Button to launch bombs from the inventory. The player starts with 3 bombs.

Ghost Pilots

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1991 for the Neo Geo MVS and AES systems, Ghost Pilots is a military-themed vertical scrolling shoot 'em up that drops players straight into an alternate-history global conflict. Heavily reminiscent of classic arcade shooters like Capcom's 1943, the game casts you as veteran pilots Charlie and Eagle. Tasked with piloting advanced sea-plane fighters known as the "Ghost Pilots," your mission is to repel the invading forces of the fascist Oviel Empire, who have deployed a massive mechanized army to conquer the world. While overshadowed by SNK's more famous fighting game catalog, Ghost Pilots remains a cult classic on the AES for its punishing difficulty, atmospheric propeller-driven combat, and distinct late-war aesthetic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning six grueling stages that transition from vast oceans and heavily fortified enemy fleets to dense jungles and underground subterranean bases, Ghost Pilots utilizes a traditional vertical-scrolling layout. Players control their aircraft using a two-button primary layout combined with a dynamic power-up system. By collecting medals and power icons dropped by specific enemy formations, players can upgrade their standard vulcan cannon, unleash devastating homing missiles, or deploy a localized shield. Additionally, players have a limited supply of smart bombs that call in allied bomber squadrons to clear the screen of standard enemies. The game also features a cooperative two-player mode, allowing both Charlie and Eagle to take to the skies simultaneously. Visually, the AES hardware pushes chunky, detailed sprite work, complete with massive battleship bosses that fill the screen and require sustained, tactical fire to dismantle their multi-part turrets.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate the aircraft in all eight directions
  • Action Keys: Z for standard vulcan gun / X for smart bomb deployment
  • Enter: Start / Pause
