Description

The King of Fighters ’95 marks the beginning of a story arc that later became known as the “Orochi Saga”. However, the only elements from the Orochi Saga known in this game is the introduction of Kyo’s rival, Iori Yagami, and Rugal’s use of the Orochi power

Rugal Bernstein, thought to have perished in an explosion in the previous game, had in fact survived and sent out invitations to the teams from the previous game signed simply ‘R’. Only one of the previous teams failed to attend the new tournament: the American Sports Team, now replaced by the “Rival Team” consisting of Iori Yagami, Billy Kane (from Fatal Fury: King of Fighters), and Eiji Kisaragi (from Art of Fighting 2). Saisyu Kusanagi, Kyo’s father, appears as a fighter for the first time (having made a non-playable cameo in KOF ’94) as a computer-controlled sub-boss character. After defeating Saisyu in the arcade mode, it is revealed that Saisyu was being brainwashed and that Rugal will fight once again as a boss character, but as an enhanced version named “Omega Rugal”.

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1995 for the Neo Geo AES arcade and home system, The King of Fighters '95 marks a monumental chapter in fighting game history as the first entry to introduce the revolutionary Team Edit system. While the inaugural 1994 tournament locked players into predetermined national squads, '95 shattered those boundaries, allowing fighters to mix and match characters freely to forge custom dream teams. This narrative serves as the direct second act of the Orochi saga. The sinister Rugal Bernstein, presumed dead after his defeat in the previous tournament, resurfaces under the mysterious alias 'R', orchestrating a new KOF tournament to lure back the world's strongest warriors. Adding to the intrigue, the iconic rival Iori Yagami forms his own team alongside Billy Kane and Eiji Kisaragi to hunt down Kyo Kusanagi, cementing one of gaming’s greatest blood feuds.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Operating on SNK's classic four-button arcade layout, KOF '95 refines the fast-paced mobility of its predecessor with the addition of the 'Hop' mechanic—a lower, faster alternative to the standard high jump that changes the rhythm of cross-up pressure. The game retains the signature Power Gauge system, which charges manually by holding down attack buttons or organically by absorbing enemy strikes. Once maxed out, players can unleash devastating Desperation Moves or execute Super Cancel sequences. Defensive options are robust, featuring rolling dodges to bypass projectiles and counter-attacks upon recovering from a block. The addition of interactive stage boundaries and fluid sprite scaling on the Neo Geo hardware makes every clash of martial arts styles feel visceral and dynamic.
