Description
A new King of Fighters tournament was announced, though the letters of invitation sent out to the fighters were no longer sent by Rugal Bernstein. The letters also announced many changes, the first of which being a massive overhaul of the tournament’s approach. During the time that had passed between the tournaments since the previous year, the King of Fighters tournament’s fame had grown immensely, to the point that it turned into a major international event, which had not happened before. Huge corporations transformed the King of Fighters tournament into something widely televised, commercialized, and celebrated, drawing in many crowds from around the world. The tournament is now held by Chizuru Kagura: a descendant of the ancient Yata Clan responsible for sealing the Orochi demon along with the Kusanagi and Yasanaki clan (the clans from Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, respectively). Chizuru uses the tournament in hopes of finding and recruiting Kyo and Iori in order to stop the upcoming Orochi threat, but Kyo and Iori aren’t exactly willing to work together on friendly terms.
The King of Fighters '96
Overview & History
Released by SNK in 1996 for the Neo Geo AES, The King of Fighters '96 marks a pivotal turning point for the legendary crossover fighting game franchise. Abandoning the asset recycling of earlier entries, SNK completely overhauled the engine, redrawing every character sprite to be taller, more detailed, and dramatically more expressive. The storyline centers around the mysterious Goenitz, one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, who manipulates the tournament alongside the returning Chizuru Kagura to resurrect their malevolent deity. This installment reshaped the franchise's lore by introducing iconic newcomers like Leona Heidern, Geese Howard (entering the official tournament fray), and the Boss Team. By integrating dramatic cinematic intros for specific team rivalries and expanding the overarching Orochi saga, SNK delivered a dark, narrative-driven masterpiece that remains a high-water mark for 1990s arcade fighting games.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
KOF '96 revolutionized the series by overhauling the mobility and defensive systems. The game abandoned the traditional sidestep mechanic from '95 in favor of the newly refined 'Advanced' dodge system, which allowed players to roll forward or backward through attacks, creating intense psychological warfare. Furthermore, the jump system was split into three distinct heights—normal, low, and hyper—giving aerial approach options unprecedented depth. The four-button layout (Light Punch, Light Kick, Heavy Punch, Heavy Kick) supports complex execution for supers and desperation moves. Character movesets were heavily balanced; for instance, Kyo Kusanagi received his signature modern rekka-style combos, while Iori Yagami's relentless pressure tools and Goenitz's screen-filling wind projectiles showcased SNK's mastery of sprite-based priority systems. The meter management system rewards aggressive play, letting players stock up to three stock levels of Super Special Moves to turn the tide of a 3-on-3 team battle.
