Description

Two years have passed since the last King of Fighters tournament and no-one has seen Kyo Kusanagi or Iori Yagami since they defeated Orochi at the climax of the 1997 tournament, but out of the blue, new invitations are sent out to many characters, inviting them to a brand new tournament, though this competition is more of a secretive affair than the ones in ’96 and ’97. Unlike in previous games of the series, there are four characters per team instead of three. In total, there are seven teams, each containing four characters, four Team Edit characters and a boss.

The King of Fighters '99: Millennium Battle

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1999 for the Neo Geo AES, The King of Fighters '99: Millennium Battle marked a dramatic turning point for the legendary fighting franchise. Abandoning the traditional sacred treasures plot of the Orochi saga, SNK initiated the "Nest Chronicles," plunging players into a dark sci-fi conspiracy involving the clandestine NESTS syndicate, a mysterious rogue clone named K', and his reluctant partner Maxima. This entry introduced a grittier industrial aesthetic, complete with rainy urban backdrops and a synthesized soundtrack that perfectly captured the approaching turn-of-the-millennium paranoia. It was also the first in the series to downscale teams from four members to three, fundamentally altering tactical roster building.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The defining mechanical innovation of KOF '99 is the Striker System. Alongside your primary three-fighter team, players select a fourth character to act as a "Striker." During battle, hitting the CD buttons summons this auxiliary character onto the screen to execute a specific support attack, save you from a combo, or extend your offensive pressure. This added an unprecedented layer of mind games and combo extensions. Furthermore, the game revamps the classic Super Special Move gauge into the Counter Mode and Armor Mode systems. Triggering these modes via specific guard-cancel maneuvers grants infinite stock for super moves, enables guard-crushing blows, or renders the fighter unflinched by incoming strikes, rewarding aggressive, high-risk playstyles.
