Developed by Alpha Denshi (ADK) and published by SNK in 1992, World Heroes arrived early in the Neo Geo AES lifespan during the post-Street Fighter II fighting game boom. Distinguishing itself from contemporary peers, the game introduces Dr. Brown, a eccentric scientist who invents a time machine to gather the eight greatest historical figures and warriors from various eras—including the Spartan warrior Muscle Power, the ninja Hanzo, and the female Joan of Arc analogue, Janne—to determine the ultimate champion through a grand martial arts tournament.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 1:1 fighters of its era, World Heroes pioneered distinct modes: the traditional "Normal Game" and the chaotic "Death Match" mode. Death Matches inject hazardous terrain into the combat arena, featuring electric ropes, landmines, oil slicks, and revolving doors that fundamentally alter spatial control and defensive positioning. Mechanically, the game utilizes a four-button layout (Light Punch, Heavy Punch, Light Kick, Heavy Kick) and introduces a dedicated button for throwing characters, alongside a stamina/stun meter. Special moves are executed via classic motion inputs like quarter-circle rolls and charge commands; for instance, Hanzo unleashes his iconic fireball (Kokuha-zan) and teleport strike, while Rasputin utilizes floating projectile ice orbs and a sliding low kick to zone opponents. The pacing is slightly floatier than Capcom's offerings, rewarding precise spacing and air-to-air juggles across diverse historical time-period stages.
