Shougi no Tatsujin Color

Overview & History

Released in 1999 by SNK exclusively for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, Shougi no Tatsujin Color (Master of Shougi) brings the complex, traditional Japanese board game into the palm of your hand. Building upon its arcade predecessor, this handheld adaptation translates the cerebral depth of Shogi—often compared to Western chess—into a vibrant, portable format. While it features no narrative storyline, the game focuses entirely on mastering the intricacies of Japanese chess through varied AI opponents, capturing the strategic prestige of the board game era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Shogi differs fundamentally from Western chess through its "drop" mechanic: captured pieces can be reintroduced back onto the board as your own combatants. The game features multiple difficulty tiers, allowing novices to learn piece movements while challenging veterans with aggressive AI. The Neo Geo Pocket Color's hardware renders the traditional wooden board and kanji-inscribed pieces with surprising clarity. Players command standard pieces including Fu (pawn), Kyo (lance), Kei (knight), Gin (silver general), Kin (gold general), Kaku (bishop), Hi (rook), and the prized Gyoku (king), all capable of promotion upon reaching the enemy camp.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate board grid and menu selections
  • Action Keys: Select and drop pieces (A Button: Confirm/Place, B Button: Cancel/Rotate view)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
