Description

The main antagonist of the story, Nitros Oxide, is the self-proclaimed fastest racer in the galaxy who threatens to turn Earth into a concrete parking lot. Preceding Oxide are four boss characters: Ripper Roo, a deranged straitjacket-wearing kangaroo; Papu Papu, the morbidly obese leader of the island’s native tribe; Komodo Joe, a Komodo dragon with a speech sound disorder; and Pinstripe Potoroo, a greedy pinstripe-clad potoroo. The four boss characters, along with an imperfect and morally ambiguous clone of Crash Bandicoot named Fake Crash, become accessible as playable characters if the Adventure Mode is fully completed.

CTR: Crash Team Racing

Overview & History

Developed by Naughty Dog and originally released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1999 for the PlayStation, CTR: Crash Team Racing revolutionized the mascot kart-racing genre by injecting the frantic, vibrant energy of the Crash Bandicoot universe into high-speed arcade racing. The storyline kicks off when the megalomaniacal alien Nitros Oxide arrives on Earth, threatening to turn the entire planet into a giant concrete parking lot unless someone can defeat him in a high-stakes racing tournament. Players must traverse classic hubs from the series, battling iconic heroes and villains alike—such as Cortex, Coco, and Tiny Tiger—to earn trophies, relics, and boss keys before facing Oxide himself in a blistering showdown in outer space.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike many arcade racers of its era, Crash Team Racing introduced a remarkably deep and skill-based physics engine, anchored by its revolutionary Power Slide and Turbo Boost mechanics. Drifting requires players to leap into the air using the R1/L1 buttons and rhythmically press the opposite shoulder button when the exhaust smoke turns black to fire off up to three consecutive turbo boosts. Item boxes scattered across vibrant tracks like Crash Cove and Tiger Temple grant randomized offensive weaponry and tactical power-ups—from tracking missile crates and bouncing TNT blocks to the game-changing Wumpa Fruit upgrade, which supercharges your top speed and enhances weapon abilities once you collect ten. Beyond the robust single-player Adventure mode, the title shines in its frantic split-screen battle arenas and time trial ghosts, offering unmatched replayability through hidden shortcuts and demanding Relic Races.
